Police Lobby Groups Say Tasers Not Dangerous. Citing No Evidence. Seriously! (:

taser0624Toronto Star: The country’s two largest lobby groups representing chiefs and rank-and-file police say Tasers are safe and all police officers should be authorized to use them.

At a news conference aimed at countering “inaccurate information” (like burns, tissue damage, lethal ventricular fibrillation, neurological effects) police say the public has received, the groups argued there is no proven link between Taser use and the deaths of more than 300 people in the U.S. and 25 in Canada that have occurred shortly after police jolted them with the 50,000-volt weapons.

In a position paper yesterday, the Canadian Police Association and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police called for little change in the way police now use Tasers.

“To date there is no evidence, either scientific or medical, that a conducted energy weapon has been the direct cause of death … on any person,” said Tom Kaye, the chiefs’ vice-president.

bspcommentI’m amazed at how quickly the Police Associations have setup in to defend the use of tasers using questionable statements like those made in this story. Perhaps they need to be reminded that tasers were introduced in the 70’s ONLY as a non-lethal alternative to deadly force. Seems to me the tasers have become the modern day night stick for officers who would perfer not to “work up a sweat” doing their job. The fact that these two Police Associations have found no evidence to support the claim that tasers kill people pretty much speaks for itself.

  1. I don’t have a problem with tasers. It is better than shooting with lethal force, in my opinion.

    • The sad fact is that tasers are killing more people than police officers shooting guns. Lethal force is just polite way of saying killing.
